Trenton’s Law took effect in Florida on October 1, 2025, named after 18-year-old Trenton Stewart, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2023.
The law implements stricter penalties for DUI and BUI (boating under the influence) manslaughter:
- Doubles prison sentences from 15 to 30 years for repeat offenders
- Makes it a misdemeanor in some cases to refuse a breath or urine test on the scene
Belle Isle Police hope the stiffer penalties will make people “think twice” about driving or boating while intoxicated. Law enforcement agencies have increased patrols on both roads and waterways in response to the new law.
