Florida TaxWatch has released five property tax relief proposals for lawmakers to consider as the legislature prepares for the 2026 session, following continued public demand for tax reduction measures.
The nonpartisan government watchdog organization outlined options ranging from immediate legislative reforms to gradual elimination of property taxes on homestead properties. The proposals come as Florida lawmakers gather data on potential property tax changes after concluding the 2025 legislative session without specific relief measures.
Five Proposed Options
The organization’s recommendations include:
- Immediate statutory reforms for 2026 focused on transparency, including making rolled-back tax rates the default
- Phased elimination of property taxes on homestead properties over multiple years
- Accelerated elimination for senior citizens on fixed incomes
- Excluding school taxes while eliminating other property taxes for homeowners
- Across-the-board reduction through percentage-based cuts to assessed property values
Revenue Concerns
Florida Tax Watch President and CEO Dominic Calabro emphasized the need for careful consideration, stating lawmakers should ensure any changes last at least 10 years since constitutional amendments are difficult to modify.
The organization warned that all options could reduce local government revenue, potentially affecting core services. Executive Vice President Jeff Knottkamp stressed the importance of maintaining essential government functions across all 67 counties.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly expressed concern that revenue losses could force localities to either implement a 12% sales tax or reduce funding for police, education, and transportation.
Governor Ron DeSantis has maintained his commitment to property tax relief despite these concerns, dismissing warnings from what he called “entrenched politicians.”
The House Select Committee on Property Taxes is scheduled to meet again in October, with concrete proposals ready by November.
