As construction continues and foot traffic slows in parts of St. Petersburg, several longtime businesses have closed their doors. In contrast, new ones are preparing to move in — sparking concern among residents and community groups.

“Cycle closed. It was one of the first breweries in St. Pete, and now it’s changed ownership,” said resident Barry Ezell, who makes a point to support local shops weekly. “It feels like it’s becoming a trend.”

The group Keep St. Petersburg Local stated that shifting demographics, pandemic impacts, and rapid development have led to an increase in closures in recent years. “There will be more closures this year,” the group said, urging residents to support neighborhood businesses “now, more than ever.”

For Sara Stonecipher, owner of Misred Outfitters downtown for 15 years, the struggle is unlike anything she has seen. “We’re putting in every penny and sacrifice we have. Nobody is making money. Everyone has a second job. And you’re watching your friends go out of business,” she said.

St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Chris Steinocher acknowledged the challenges but said the closures largely reflect businesses tied to pre-pandemic leases and economic conditions. “We don’t feel like we’re spiraling downward,” he said. “We’re retooling for a new economy. St. Pete is still thriving, but our hospitality sector is recalibrating.”

Steinocher noted it is currently the off-season for tourism, and some businesses are still recovering from recent hurricanes.

Stonecipher said high commercial rents — among the highest in Florida — are adding pressure. “The rising prices have affected everyone, from homes to small businesses. We need balance, with support from both locals and tourists,” she said.

The Chamber highlighted programs such as its Entrepreneur Academy and partnerships with the city as ways to help businesses adapt.
