The City of Tampa has launched a project to restore the fishing pier at Ballast Point Park, which was damaged during the 2024 hurricane season.

Engineering reports found the 970-foot pier does not need to be rebuilt from the ground up. Instead, crews will carry out a complete restoration, replacing all pier boards and reinforcing its structure. Upgrades will also include plumbing, lighting, electrical systems, and improved amenities such as fish-cleaning stations.

“The Ballast Point Pier is a treasured Tampa spot for fishing, strolling, enjoying views of the water and of downtown, and even fireworks and air shows,” Mayor Jane Castor said. “Ballast Point Park is a popular place to begin walks and bike rides along Bayshore Boulevard. This restoration is great news for all Tampaians and visitors – even pirates.”

The city will begin a competitive solicitation process to hire a design and construction team.

Ballast Point Pier was rebuilt after the 1921 hurricane, a process that took four years. It stood strong for nearly a century before hurricanes Helene and Milton struck in 2024. City officials have not yet announced when the new repairs will be finished.
