The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says speed cameras in school zones are making an impact, with thousands of drivers cited since the program began less than a year ago.
Since the first cameras were activated in November 2024, nearly 5,800 tickets have been issued. About 3,100 drivers have already paid the $100 fine, generating more than $310,000 in revenue.
The money has been distributed as follows:
- $120,627 to public safety initiatives
- $64,953 to RedSpeed, the camera vendor
- $61,860 to the Florida Department of Revenue
- $37,116 to Hillsborough County Public Schools
- $15,465 to the School Crossing Guard Program
- $9,279 to FDLE training
In addition to citations, deputies say nearly 20,000 warnings have been issued. Each new camera comes with a 30-day grace period during which drivers receive warnings instead of tickets.
Currently, 29 Hillsborough County schools are equipped with speed cameras. Riverview High School leads the county in warnings at 4,869, followed by Citrus Park Elementary with 3,904 and Jennings Middle School in Seffner with 1,650.
These figures do not yet reflect the newest cameras installed this year at schools inside the city of Tampa.
