More than 1.7 million window air conditioners have been recalled after reports of mold growth inside the units, which can cause respiratory problems and allergic reactions.
The recall affects Midea U and U+ Window Air Conditioners, sold under several brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire and Sea Breeze.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), water can pool inside the air conditioners instead of draining properly, creating conditions for mold growth. The agency has received 152 reports of mold, including 17 cases where consumers reported health symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throats and respiratory infections.
The units were sold at major retailers such as Costco, Menards, Home Depot and Best Buy, as well as online at Walmart.com, Amazon.com and others, between March 2020 and May 2025. Prices ranged from $280 to $500, with models available in 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 BTU sizes.
Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled units and contact Midea for either a free repair or a full or prorated refund, depending on the unit’s age. Refunds require mailing back the unit after cutting the power cord, while repair options include scheduling a service visit or requesting a do-it-yourself kit with a new drain plug.
Nearly 50,000 units sold in Canada are also included in the recall. Customers can check if their unit is affected by visiting www.MideaUrecall.expertinquiry.com and entering the model number, found on the front right side of the unit.
