Tampa’s effort to modernize its noise ordinance is moving forward, with consultants gathering data and residents weighing in on concerns ranging from loud music to modified car exhausts.

City officials hosted a community meeting Monday to share updates on the sound study, which began earlier this year. Consultants have been taking sound measurements in neighborhoods such as Ybor City, downtown Tampa, and South Howard.

“What we need is what we call source data,” explained Bob Finck, principal consultant with HMMH, the firm conducting the study. “If we measure noise outside a business, how much does it drop off one or two streets over near homes?”

The study was launched after a rise in noise complaints from across the city. Residents at the meeting pointed to late-night music in SoHo and street activity downtown as frequent disruptions.

“The people who modify their exhausts are loud enough to be a real issue,” said Tampa resident Jay Ross.

The results of the analysis will help shape recommendations for updating the city’s ordinance, with a report expected to reach City Council by fall or early winter.
