Florida is one of a dozen states approved to tighten restrictions on what items can be bought using SNAP benefits, commonly known as food stamps.

Earlier this year, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that states can now apply to ban SNAP purchases of sugary drinks like soda. The decision follows years of efforts by some states to prevent taxpayer-funded benefits from being used on non-nutritious items such as soda and candy.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is now allowing states to request waivers that further limit the use of SNAP for unhealthy food and beverages.

Supporters of the policy, including Kennedy, say it’s aimed at encouraging healthier eating habits across the country.

SNAP already prohibits the purchase of alcohol, tobacco, CBD products, vitamins, supplements, hot or prepared foods, and non-food items.

Beginning in January 2026, Florida will ban the use of SNAP benefits to purchase:

  • Soda
  • Energy drinks
  • Candy
  • Prepared desserts

As of this year, SNAP serves around 42 million Americans each month, providing an average of $188 per person.
