The My Safe Florida Home grant program is now accepting new applications, but high demand has already caused some users to experience website outages.
This popular state-run initiative provides free wind mitigation inspections and up to $10,000 in matching grants for storm-resistance upgrades like impact-resistant windows, doors, and reinforced roofs. Funded by taxpayer dollars, the program comes with strict eligibility rules—including limits on home value and contractor selection—but the potential savings and home improvements can be significant.
This year, state lawmakers approved a record $280 million for the program. Still, funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Key Application Dates:
- August 4: Low-income homeowners age 60+ (earning less than 80% of the area median income)
- August 18: Low-income homeowners of any age
- September 1: Moderate-income homeowners age 60+ (earning up to 120% of the median income)
- September 15: Moderate-income homeowners of any age
What to Expect
Stacey Baker, a Pinellas County realtor, says homeowners should be ready for a multi-step process. “Registering is just the beginning,” she explained. “You’ll need to schedule a wind mitigation inspection—required for single-family homes built before 2008—to determine what improvements are eligible,” she explained to WTSP.
The inspection assesses major structural components like the roof, windows, doors, and garage door. Only after the inspection is complete can homeowners apply for reimbursement.
“There are two applications: one for the inspection and one for the grant,” Baker said. “You just have to be patient. Patience is a virtue.”
Added Incentive: Insurance Savings
Upgrades made through the program can lead to major insurance discounts. “Wind mitigation credits can reduce your hurricane premium by up to 88% a year,” said Jake Holehouse of HH Insurance. “The program is designed to help homeowners offset those insurance costs.”
To qualify, the home must be a primary residence with a homestead exemption and have a market value of $700,000 or less.
Holehouse says the impact can be immediate. “We’ve seen policyholders get checks of $1,000 to $3,000 back from insurance providers just from these improvements,” he said. Upgrades like hurricane straps, roof sealant barriers, and storm shutters are among the top ways to earn credits.
