The City of Tampa is holding its final two storm resiliency meetings this week, with events scheduled for Monday evening at Adum K-8 Magnet School in South Tampa and Tuesday at the TPD Rich House in Tampa Heights.
These meetings offer residents updates on the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce flooding during heavy rains and hurricanes.
Since last fall, Tampa has invested millions in flood mitigation—installing backup generators at pump stations citywide and clearing storm ditches and stormwater systems to improve drainage.
Still, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor emphasized that no infrastructure is designed to withstand the kind of extreme flooding seen during hurricanes Helen and Milton.
“We want to be realistic with the community,” Castor said. “There is no stormwater system in the country—or the world—that can handle massive amounts of rainfall in a short time. It’s important the public understands that, and also that they know they have a role to play in preparedness.”
