Florida’s new “Super Speeder” Law, officially House Bill 351, is now in effect as of July 1—and law enforcement agencies say it could make a serious impact on road safety.

The law imposes steep penalties on drivers caught going more than 50 miles per hour over the posted speed limit or exceeding 100 mph anywhere in the state. Violators may face fines, jail time, or even have their licenses revoked for repeat offenses.

Just minutes after the law took effect, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported citing a driver who was clocked at 104 mph in a 70 mph zone. While that driver wasn’t arrested, the hefty fine he received serves as a warning of the law’s bite.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Tara Crescenzi says the law is not just about punishment—it’s also about prevention.

A first offense can result in a $500 fine, up to 30 days in jail, or both. Repeat offenders could face up to 90 days behind bars, a $1,000 fine, or both. Drivers caught twice within five years may also face a one-year license suspension.

“We’re seeing people flying down the interstate at over 100 mph, weaving through traffic, tailgating, and taking huge risks,” Crescenzi said. “This law aims to curb that behavior and protect not just those drivers, but everyone else on the road.”

Orange County Sheriff John Mina previously told News 13 that deputies cited over 500 drivers in 2024 alone for speeds exceeding 100 mph. He warned that the consequences of such speeds can be fatal.

“When you’re going over 100 and crash, you’re likely not going to survive—and neither is anyone else involved,” Mina said. “At that speed, there’s barely any time to react.”

Lt. Crescenzi emphasized that officer discretion still plays a role in enforcement, but a driver’s record could influence the decision to arrest.

“If someone’s had multiple citations or warnings and they’re still pushing 100 mph or more, it shows a pattern of dangerous behavior,” she said. “This law gives us another tool to try and change that before tragedy strikes.”
