Florida drivers can now be fined for speeding through flooded streets and creating hazardous wakes, thanks to a newly signed bipartisan law.

The “no wake” provision was added to Senate Bill 462—a broader transportation package—by two Pinellas County lawmakers: Sen. Nick DiCeglie, R-Indian Rocks Beach, and Rep. Lindsay Cross, D-St. Petersburg. The pair introduced the measure after hearing repeated complaints from residents following Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Under the new law, cities and counties are authorized to create temporary slow-speed zones on flooded roads. Law enforcement agencies now have clear authority to issue tickets to drivers who ignore those limits and generate dangerous wakes.

The legislation received support from both sides of the aisle in Tallahassee, as well as backing from local agencies including the St. Petersburg Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
