As Tropical Storm Andrea passed by Florida last month without causing major damage, it served as a reminder that a busy hurricane season may lie ahead.
To help residents stay better informed and prepared, a new app called Beacon 24/7 is now available. Powered by artificial intelligence and backed by top weather researchers across Florida, the app offers real-time alerts and updates to keep users ahead of any developing storms.
The name “Beacon” stands for Broadcast Emergency Alerts and Communications Operation Network, highlighting the app’s mission to deliver timely and accurate emergency information.
Beacon 24/7 was developed through a partnership between the Florida Division of Emergency Management, WUFT-FM, the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, and Futuri Media.
In a recently released video, Randy Wright, executive director of UF’s Division of Media Properties, also explains how AI is helping Floridians stay one step ahead during storm season.
