As energy prices climb alongside summer temperatures, Florida families struggling to keep up with rising electric bills may be eligible for federal assistance.

“You know the temperatures are rising — that can absolutely mean higher energy bills for folks,” said Cherie Jacobs with Tampa Electric (TECO).

Florida Commerce is offering up to $1,000 in utility bill credits through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Several utility providers in the Tampa Bay region, including Withlacoochee River Electric and TECO, are participating in the effort. Withlacoochee River Electric reports that over 4,000 customers have already received aid.

TECO has launched a new online form to help customers apply for LIHEAP funding, which is available through the end of June.

“We strongly encourage folks — if you think you’re eligible — fill out the application,” Jacobs said. “Florida Commerce will determine if you qualify.”

Last year, tens of thousands of TECO customers received state energy assistance.

Eligibility depends on household income: families must earn no more than 60% of Florida’s median income. For a family of four, that means an annual income below $59,000.

While the aid is helpful, some advocates argue it’s only a temporary fix.

“If people want to take advantage of these programs, they absolutely should,” said Calista Snider. “But from TECO’s corporate standpoint, this feels like a band-aid that doesn’t address the core issue.”

One major concern is ongoing rate hikes. In March, both TECO and Duke Energy raised monthly bills by about $20.

“With inflation already pushing up the cost of everyday necessities, these increases just aren’t sustainable,” said Isabella Moeller with Food & Water Watch. “It’s not affordable for the average Floridian.”

In addition, Hillsborough County is set to receive more than $700 million in federal disaster relief. The Hillsborough Affordable Energy Coalition will host a community forum next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Seminole Heights Library to discuss how those funds might support local energy initiatives.

TECO customers should apply for assistance by the end of June. Duke Energy customers have until September to submit applications.
