Just as SunPass scam texts seem to be fading, a new wave of fraudulent messages is emerging.
According to the Polk County Tax Collector’s Office, scammers are now pretending to be employees of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), often referred to as the “DMV.” These fake texts falsely claim recipients owe fines for unresolved traffic violations. The messages warn that failure to pay could result in suspended driving privileges or even criminal charges.
Victims are directed to click a link to settle the alleged balance. Although the site may appear legitimate, it’s designed to steal sensitive payment information.
Important: Do not click the link or enter the web address into your browser.
FLHSMV officials have confirmed on social media that they do not collect payments through text messages. Anyone receiving one of these scams is urged to report it to the Florida Attorney General’s Office at: https://www.myfloridalegal.com/consumer-protection/consumer-alerts.
