As the summer heat and sun ramp up in Florida, a new study from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that just 22% of sunscreen brands effectively shield skin from harmful UV rays.

In its 2025 Sunscreen Guide, the EWG evaluated over 2,200 sun protection products and identified only 498 that met its safety and effectiveness standards. The group is also urging the FDA to update its outdated regulations.

“Many sunscreens continue to make misleading claims, use old formulas, and contain ingredients that raise health concerns,” the guide notes.

One of the most significant trends is the growing use of mineral-based sunscreens, which rely on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—currently the only two sunscreen filters the FDA considers both safe and effective.

Mineral sunscreens now make up 43% of the products reviewed in EWG’s 2025 guide.

Despite marketing hype, EWG emphasizes that higher SPF doesn’t always mean better protection, offering only a slight increase in UVB coverage.

To stay safe in the sun, EWG recommends:

  • Reapplying sunscreen frequently
  • Being skeptical of high SPF labels
  • Choosing lotions or sticks over sprays
  • Opting for mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide
  • Wearing protective clothing like hats and long sleeves
  • Seeking or creating shade when possible
