The Volusia County Council has unanimously approved $133.5 million in federal funding to enhance stormwater and flood mitigation infrastructure. The funds, provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant, aim to address flooding issues exacerbated by recent hurricanes and heavy rainfall.

The investment will support projects such as upgrading drainage systems, constructing retention ponds, and improving flood barriers across the county. Council members emphasized the urgency of the improvements, citing increasing flood risks due to climate change and aging infrastructure.

“This is a critical step toward protecting our communities and ensuring resilience against future storms,” said County Chair Jane Smith. The projects are expected to begin in late 2025, with completion targeted for 2028. Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming public meetings to learn more about the planned improvements.
