Florida lawmakers are moving closer to passing new protections for the state’s natural parks with the State Park Preservation Act (SB 80).

The legislative momentum follows a wave of protests across the state, where residents rallied against proposed developments within Florida’s treasured parks.

Next up: the state Senate will vote on a bill aimed at halting the construction of features like pickleball courts and expanded lodging facilities.

The core question being raised is: When you visit a Florida state park, will you be greeted by untouched nature and wildlife—or by newly paved golf courses and resort-style accommodations? That debate is reaching a critical point as efforts to safeguard nine state parks near a final vote.

“Our landscapes are irreplaceable,” said environmental advocate Gia Medina. “Once they’re gone, we’ll never get them back.”

Attempts to soften the bill and allow more flexibility for developers were struck down during the bill’s final committee stop on Tuesday—another win for conservation advocates.

The push for stronger protections gained traction after leaked plans revealed potential developments at parks like Hillsborough River and Honeymoon Island, sparking public backlash.

“I don’t believe it’ll stop at just one pickleball court or glamping site,” Medina added. “Once that door is open, it won’t close until we’ve lost what makes Florida wild.”

Still, not everyone agrees with the restrictions.

“If new features encourage people to get outside, step away from screens, and engage with others, I support the changes,” said Matthew McClellan, who sees potential in adding recreational elements like disc golf courses or pickleball areas.

“There’s a lot of underused space. With the right approach, we could enhance the parks without taking away their charm,” McClellan added.

The bill’s fate now rests with the Florida Senate. If approved, the new protections would go into effect this July.
