Pinellas County has finalized the acquisition of a 14-acre sanctuary, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding natural landscapes.
The West Klosterman Preserve, located near Tarpon Springs, was purchased through a partnership between the county and WK Preservation Group Inc., with each contributing $1.5 million to acquire the land from the Pinellas County School District. The deal was completed following the group’s funding announcement in January.
Since 2022, the West Klosterman Preserve community has worked tirelessly to protect the site from a proposed condominium development. The county noted that the nonprofit, alongside local advocates, dedicated five years to ensuring the land’s preservation for conservation purposes.
The site will now become the Mariner’s Point Management Area, a haven for endangered plants and wildlife. Managed by Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources, the area will prioritize biodiversity and ecosystem health.
“This acquisition highlights Pinellas County’s partnership with its community to preserve essential lands for future generations,” said Paul Cozzie, Director of Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources.
“The success of the West Klosterman Preserve shows what’s possible when we unite for a cause,” said Tex Carter, President of WK Preservation Group. “We’re excited to continue collaborating with the county to protect our natural heritage.”
The county emphasized that this joint effort reflects a strong local commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation goals.
To maintain its ecological integrity, the preserve will remain closed to the public, ensuring the protection of its habitats and species.
