Every year, Pasco County hosts its Disaster Expo to help residents prepare for the challenges of hurricane season and other natural disasters. This year’s event, held on April 5, 2025, at Pasco Safety Town in Shady Hills, carried heightened significance following a hurricane-filled 2024.
Pasco County Emergency Management Director Andrew Fossa emphasized the importance of preparation, reflecting on last year’s intense storms. “It flooded the golf course,” Fossa recalled. “It started getting into their houses, and [rescue crews] came in and started plucking the residents out as fast as they could.” These experiences highlight the critical need for readiness in the face of severe weather.
The expo showcased tools and technologies used in emergency rescues, such as airboats from the Florida Wildlife Commission and drones from the Sheriff’s Office. These demonstrations aimed to give attendees a firsthand look at the resources deployed during disasters. “It’s better to be prepared and evacuate and nothing happens than to say, ‘No, I can ride this out,’” Fossa advised.
In addition to rescue equipment displays, the event offered practical tips on evacuation planning, home protection, and assembling go-kits for people and pets. Attendees also had opportunities to engage with emergency management experts and participate in family-friendly activities like creating go-kits and exploring touch-a-truck exhibits.
The Disaster Expo serves as a vital reminder that preparation is key to safeguarding lives and property during emergencies. By equipping residents with knowledge and resources, Pasco County continues its commitment to building a resilient community.
