Florida Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a plan on Monday to provide homeowners with rebate checks averaging $1,000 per homesteaded property to offset property tax costs. The proposed rebates, set to be distributed in December, would cover state-mandated school property taxes for over 5.1 million homesteaded properties throughout Florida.
According to the governor’s office, this initiative is a significant move toward DeSantis’s ultimate objective of abolishing property taxes via a future constitutional amendment. During a news conference, DeSantis emphasized the need for a Florida-focused tax relief package, stating, “We need a Florida-first tax package.”
DeSantis argued that property taxes essentially force homeowners to pay rent to the government and noted that constitutional protections for Florida homeowners would require voter approval in 2026. “In the meantime, Floridians need relief,” he said. “I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each household as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year. Let’s get this done for the people of Florida this session.”
The governor urged the Florida Legislature to promptly grant the authority needed to implement the rebates, ensuring swift relief for homeowners across the state.
