Florida lawmakers are considering a new bill to address the rise in extreme speeding violations. Senate Bill 1782 proposes strict penalties for drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more.
Under the proposed legislation, first-time offenders would face a $2,500 fine, a six-month suspension of their driver’s license, and a 30-day impoundment of their vehicle. Repeat offenders could face steeper consequences, including a $5,000 fine, a one-year license suspension, and another 30-day vehicle impoundment.
Orange County Sheriff John Mena highlighted the alarming increase in reckless speeding incidents, reporting 101 citations for driving over 100 mph in January alone, compared to just 29 during the same period last year.
“It’s not the Autobahn,” Mena told WESH. “We believe this legislation could serve as a deterrent—no one wants to lose their license for a year.”
If approved and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, SB-1782 is set to take effect on July 1.
