Pinellas County is once again seeking to develop the 235-acre site of the former Toytown landfill, this time with plans to transform it into a premier youth sports complex.
Located near Interstate 275 and Roosevelt Boulevard, the proposed project by Sports Facilities Companies outlines a vision for 20 baseball and softball fields, five multi-purpose fields, 24 pickleball courts, and 12 sand volleyball courts.
Brian Lowack, President of Visit St. Pete-Clearwater, emphasized the project’s potential to tap into the growing youth sports tourism industry.
“We know there’s a strong demand for sports tournament venues, not just in the Tampa Bay area but across Florida and the Southeast,” Lowack said.
He also highlighted the county’s beaches, dining, and cultural attractions as key factors that could make the Toytown site an appealing destination for national and local tournaments.
Pinellas County specifically sought developers with experience building on former landfill sites when issuing the request for proposals.
Sports Facilities Companies projects the complex could generate $350 million in revenue over five years.
The next phase involves the developer submitting a detailed design and financial plan before the county proceeds with the project.
