Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, FEMA has disbursed over $1.5 billion to assist Floridians. Yet, nearly six months later, WTSP reports that some survivors, expecting ongoing temporary housing payments, are suddenly finding that important support cut off.
Terri Orr of St. Pete Beach is among them. In a single night, he lost his home, car, cherished collectibles, and handyman business equipment. “I’d built my life here for four years,” Orr said. “I didn’t know where to turn.”
Through FEMA’s temporary housing assistance, Orr secured an apartment in St. Pete Beach, with the agency covering his first month’s rent and security deposit. Based on discussions with FEMA staff, he anticipated further reimbursement in February—but it never arrived. “It’s February’s last day, and March rent is due,” he said. “I had to beg them to apply my security deposit.”
After weeks of persistence, Orr learned his payment is “pending,” but he feels FEMA is giving him and others “the runaround.” “It’s hurry up and wait—hours on hold,” he said. “It’s exhausting, emotionally and mentally.”
On Wednesday, WTSP spoke with FEMA spokesperson Jassiel Olivero Melo, who emphasized the agency’s ongoing commitment. “We have over 1,200 staff still deployed, helping survivors recover,” Melo said. “Our mission is to get people back on their feet.”
Melo explained that temporary housing aid for Hurricane Helene victims extends through March 2026—18 months post-disaster—but requires monthly reapplications to confirm eligibility. “It’s a month-by-month process,” she said. “Missing documentation can delay approvals.” Eligibility, she added, varies case by case.
Melo urged survivors to keep detailed records and stay proactive. “Call us, update your materials, and submit documentation,” she advised. While FEMA has shuttered its in-person sites in Florida, support remains available via phone, website, or app.
