February was a milestone month for St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), which welcomed an impressive 194,876 passengers—its busiest February to date. Contributing to this success were several key factors, including newly added Allegiant routes, increased flight frequency, and the dedication of Pinellas tourism businesses in recovering from recent hurricanes.

“We’re now offering more frequent flights to our most popular destinations,” shared Michele Routh, Public Relations Director at PIE. “Asheville, for instance, is now a daily service, and other routes operate four to six days a week.”

With 64 nonstop routes, including three operated by Sun Country Airlines, PIE continues to grow its network. Some of the top destinations attracting travelers include Asheville, Knoxville, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Allentown, Concord (NC), Flint (MI), and Indianapolis.

Expanding Reach to Meet Growing Demand

The airport recently launched a nonstop service to Colorado Springs, with additional routes planned for the future. “Allegiant drives those decisions, and they’re committed to growing here,” Routh explained. “Out of Allegiant’s 120+ airports, PIE ranks in the top three for passenger traffic.”

To accommodate this increasing demand, PIE is embarking on its largest capital project yet—the Terminal Improvements Project. Currently in the design phase, this expansion will add jet bridges, a unified TSA checkpoint, larger passenger waiting areas, and upgraded amenities, including restrooms and concessions. “We need more space and resources to serve our travelers,” Routh noted.

Additionally, a new parking garage design is set to begin this summer, addressing the growing need for more convenient parking solutions.

Enhancing the Traveler Experience

For those flying out of PIE for the first time, the airport recommends arriving two hours before departure and checking www.fly2pie.com for essential updates, including parking availability. “When our long-term parking fills up, travelers may need to use one of our economy lots,” Routh advised. The website also provides quick access to Allegiant flight information, TSA guidelines, and other helpful tools.

PIE remains committed to delivering a seamless travel experience. “Our focus is on fostering a friendly, customer-centric atmosphere,” Routh emphasized. “From Allegiant staff to TSA agents and airport team members, we all work together to ensure a positive journey for our passengers.”
