A recent poll conducted by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab (PORL) shows a growing trend among Florida homeowners: many are willing to forgo property insurance.
The poll indicates that housing and property insurance costs are the primary concerns for Floridians. Given the choice, 22% of respondents would choose to go without homeowner’s insurance.
Dr. Michael Binder, PORL faculty director and political science professor, highlighted a significant shift in public sentiment. In 2022, only 2% of respondents viewed housing costs as the most critical issue. However, this figure surged to 25% in the past year, suggesting an upward trend.
“Considering the high cost of property insurance and the increasing public concern statewide, it’s not surprising that over 20% of homeowners would opt out of it if they could,” Binder remarked.
The poll also noted regional differences: 25% of respondents in South Florida expressed willingness to skip insurance, a higher proportion than those in North and Central Florida.
