Florida has the most dangerous roads in the U.S. when it comes to intersection crashes, according to a new study analyzing data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The study, conducted by Simmrin Law Group, found that Florida tops the nation with an average of 5.19 intersection accidents per 100,000 residents—well above the national average of 2.78. The state recorded its lowest number of intersection crashes in 2019 with 1,100 incidents, but by 2021, that number had surged to 1,292—the highest in the study’s five-year analysis from 2018 to 2022.

States With the Highest Intersection Crash Rates

Florida ranks first, followed by New Mexico and Arizona. Below is a breakdown of the top 10 states with the highest intersection accident rates per 100,000 residents:

  1. Florida – 5.19
  2. New Mexico – 4.33
  3. Arizona – 4.09
  4. Delaware – 3.80
  5. South Carolina – 3.80
  6. Mississippi – 3.74
  7. Louisiana – 3.70
  8. Oklahoma – 3.68
  9. Alabama – 3.54
  10. Kansas – 3.52

While Florida leads the list, all these states exceed the national average, underscoring the need for improved traffic safety measures nationwide.

What Makes Florida’s Intersections So Dangerous?

Experts point to several factors contributing to Florida’s high rate of intersection crashes, including:

  • Heavy traffic congestion
  • Distracted driving
  • High-speed urban roads
  • A rapidly growing population and influx of tourists

“At intersections, drivers often speed, get distracted, or misjudge gaps while turning. Pedestrians and cyclists face heightened risks as they navigate shared spaces with vehicles moving in multiple directions,” a Simmrin Law Group spokesperson explained.

How to Reduce Intersection Accidents

Traffic safety experts recommend several strategies to curb intersection crashes and improve road safety, including:

  • Improved signage and road lighting
  • Optimized traffic signal timing
  • Stricter enforcement of traffic laws

Law enforcement officials also urge drivers to stay alert, obey speed limits, and use caution at intersections—especially when approaching yellow lights.

“Motorists can help prevent accidents by staying focused, avoiding distractions, and practicing defensive driving,” the study’s authors noted.

The Need for Stronger Traffic Safety Measures

With Florida leading in intersection-related crashes, transportation officials emphasize the urgency of investing in infrastructure improvements and enforcing stricter road safety policies.

For Floridians, the data serves as a reminder to drive cautiously and remain vigilant, particularly at busy intersections where accidents are most frequent.
