The beloved Citrus County beach remains closed months after Hurricane Helene caused extensive damage. Storm surge wiped out the small beach and its facilities, prompting a major restoration effort to make the area accessible again for residents and visitors.

“This is one of the few places where you can spend time right on the Gulf,” said Eric Head, Citrus County’s Community Services Director.

The beach park suffered severe damage last September, forcing the county to demolish restroom facilities and repair other structures.  –

“We were still recovering from Idalia the year before,” Head explained. “The beach remained open despite pier damage, but Helene essentially finished it off. The storm destroyed our restrooms, pier, and boat ramp dock.”

Despite the challenges, county staff have been working diligently to restore the beach safely and efficiently post hurricanes.

“Parking lots have been cleared, new signage is going up, and we’re ensuring the area is safe for visitors,” Head said.

With the beach nearly ready for reopening, focus is shifting to repairing the fishing pier and sprucing up the boat ramp.

“That will take a little more time,” Head noted. “Once the beach is finished, we’ll turn our attention to the pier and boardwalk to get them restored.”

The goal is not just to rebuild but to enhance the park beyond its previous state.

For now, the priority is reopening the beach and boat ramp, with portable restrooms available until permanent facilities are constructed.

Citrus County expects Fort Island Gulf Beach to reopen by or before February 21.
