Mayor Jane Castor has officially announced the commencement of renovations at Herman Massey Park, located in downtown Tampa.

The Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency is funding the project with a $2 million budget, according to a press release.

The renovation will feature several upgrades, including a new raised deck with moveable furniture, improved electric and plumbing systems, artificial turf, and other durable surfaces in the dog park. Additionally, a sculpture by Cuban-born artist Alexandre Arrechea will be installed.

The renovation work started in early November and is expected to be completed by Fall 2025.

“Downtown Tampa is becoming more vibrant and exciting every day. We are thrilled to invest in these improvements, making the neighborhood even more appealing to residents and visitors, both human and canine,” said Tampa City Council member Gwendolyn Henderson.

With nearly 20,000 residents in the area, Mayor Castor emphasized the importance of the new green space in enhancing the user experience. City officials also noted that the existing trees in the park will be preserved.

“We are witnessing downtown Tampa’s emergence as one of America’s most exciting places. We eagerly anticipate celebrating the re-opening of historic Kid Mason in a few weeks,” said Mayor Castor.
