In St. Petersburg, special assessments and increasing association dues are significantly impacting condo owners, prompting a group of residents to take action.

“Insurance rates increase annually,” said Diana Smith. “However, we’re uncertain about what insurance will cover.”

Residents of the Point Brittany community express concerns about being priced out of their condos, as their funds are insufficient to address property damages.

“I can only afford food and a tank of gas,” said another resident. “I’m mostly confined to my home.”

The residents are voicing their grievances to the Division of Florida Condominiums, Timeshares, and Mobile Homes of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

“I’ve lived here for about three years, and my assessments have doubled,” Smith said. “I’ve paid approximately $20,000 in additional assessments.”

Residents hope their dues will expedite much-needed repairs, including fixing a cracking and crumbling ceiling in the activity room. However, as they await project completion, their patience is wearing thin.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation responded to the residents’ complaints with the following statement:

“Based on an evaluation of the alleged statutory violation and the submitted documentation, the Division has decided to proceed by conducting an investigation into potential violations.”
