A camera set up by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently recorded an extraordinary sight: a bobcat carrying a small alligator in its jaws. While bobcats are known to prey on smaller gators, this is the first time such behavior has been documented on video by the FWC.
The footage, captured in June 2024, is part of the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute’s ongoing project to study feline leukomyelopathy (FLM). This neurological disorder affects both panthers and bobcats, leading to rear leg weakness and difficulty walking. To better understand the disorder’s spread, biologists have placed trail cameras in critical areas, occasionally capturing remarkable moments like this one.
The video highlights the importance of continued research on Florida panthers and other wildlife. FLM’s origins remain unclear, and scientists are conducting comprehensive tests to uncover its cause. The public can support these efforts by reporting sightings of animals with potential symptoms at MyFWC.com/PantherSightings.
To further aid in preserving Florida’s iconic panther population, residents can purchase a “Protect the Panther” license plate, with proceeds supporting conservation programs. For updates on this research and additional ways to help, visit the FWC website.
