After Hurricane Milton struck Brandon on October 9, Vietnam veteran Charles “Dan” Jackson found himself living without electricity when a fallen tree damaged his home’s electrical box. For over 15 weeks, he relied on the kindness of neighbors and recently received crucial help from local organizations to move toward full power restoration.

“I was existing, not living,” Jackson told WTVT, describing his situation after both FEMA and TECO informed him they couldn’t assist with the tree removal, which he couldn’t afford himself.

His neighbors became his lifeline during this challenging period. Brooke Miller and her family ran a power cord to his house, enabling him to operate essential appliances like a mini-fridge and microwave. They also helped with meals and laundry. Another neighbor provided electricity for Jackson’s TV, computer, and a small heater.

“This is a man who served our nation,” Miller said. “He is a very wonderful man. Very quiet, very self-reserved. But you just do it. If there was more that I could have done, I would.”

The situation caught the attention of Angel Foundation FL, a nonprofit that assists families during crises. The foundation coordinated with Beyel Brothers, a local crane company, to remove the tree at no cost. The complex operation required a 245-ton crane to reach over Jackson’s house while avoiding power lines.

Following the tree removal, Quality Roofing stepped in to repair Jackson’s damaged roof free of charge. “This collaborative effort is a testament to the strength of community,” said Josh Morris from Quality Roofing. “Through unity, we can rebuild and strengthen our community.”

An emotional Jackson expressed his gratitude: “I thank the Lord for them. And now, now I’m being delivered.”

With the tree removed and roof repaired, electrical crews are expected to restore Jackson’s power soon. Meanwhile, his neighbors continue to provide support until his home is fully functional again.
