As Gasparilla events kick off later this week, Tampa’s law enforcement will be patrolling on foot, on the water, and by air.

Tampa police highlight that the aviation unit, which provides a bird’s-eye view of areas year-round, will be active during Gasparilla as well. Tampa Police Chief Pilot Chris Shepherd stated that aircraft will monitor both the children’s parade on Saturday and the parade of pirates the following week.

Shepherd emphasized the benefits of an aerial perspective, particularly for events like Gasparilla. “The officer on the ground has limited visibility due to the large crowds,” Shepherd explained. “From above, we can see the bigger picture, and our camera system allows us to zoom in and observe minute details in any situation.”

In addition to helicopters, Tampa police will use cameras to closely monitor situations and provide quick information to officers on the ground.

Major Jason Dillaha of the TPD Special Operations Division noted the importance of public vigilance. “If you see something, say something so that law enforcement can take action,” Dillaha said. “There will be hundreds of police officers at this event, and you’ll be able to find someone.”

The security efforts won’t be limited to Tampa police. Chief Lee Bercaw announced that 20 law enforcement agencies from around the Tampa Bay area will assist in keeping this year’s Gasparilla safe.
