Indian Rocks Beach officials revisited the contentious issue of short-term rental regulations during a meeting, continuing a years-long debate.

In 2023, city commissioners enacted an ordinance aimed at regulating vacation rental properties, commonly listed on platforms like Airbnb and VRBO. The ordinance required rental owners to register with the city, capped occupancy at 10 guests in residential areas, set parking and noise limits, and mandated annual inspections.

These measures were introduced after residents voiced concerns about vacation rentals disrupting the community with loud parties, reckless driving, and other disturbances. However, rental property owners challenged the ordinance, arguing it was an unconstitutional overreach and claiming financial losses due to the restrictions.

Last August, city officials held a workshop to hear perspectives from both sides. Despite the feedback, the commission chose to keep the rules in place.

Now, amid ongoing legal disputes, the city is considering a revised ordinance that would eliminate many of the restrictions implemented nearly two years ago. This will mark the first reading of the proposed changes. If approved, a second vote would be required to finalize the new rules.
