The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County (DOH-Hillsborough) has issued a health alert following the detection of red tide near Skyway Beach.

Water samples collected on January 8 confirmed the presence of red tide in the area. Residents and visitors are advised to check for posted signs at public beaches or visit the “Protecting Florida Together” website for up-to-date water quality information.

Recommended Precautions:

  • Avoid swimming or wading in areas affected by red tide.
  • Rinse skin and clothing with soap and fresh water if exposed to red tide.
  • Do not consume or harvest molluscan shellfish or any distressed or dead fish from the area.
  • Protect animals by keeping them away from the water and dead fish, as red tide can harm or kill wildlife and livestock.

Red tide is caused by Karenia brevis, a microscopic algae found in the Gulf of Mexico. Exposure can lead to skin irritation, rashes, and symptoms such as burning or sore eyes.
