As drones become increasingly prevalent worldwide, the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) has launched a new exhibit aimed at introducing both children and adults to this exciting technology.
“Our role is to ensure we’re introducing and staying current with what’s happening globally,” said Janet White, MOSI’s Director of Education.
The exhibit, titled Flight Club Drone Zone, offers four 30-minute sessions daily where visitors can try their hand at flying a drone. Participants navigate an enclosed aerial obstacle course with guidance from a staff member.
“At MOSI, we aim to take visitors through a learning process,” White explained. “They engage in critical thinking as they figure out how to maneuver the drone through hoops, honing problem-solving skills they can apply in everyday life.”
The exhibit, made possible through a partnership with Suncoast Credit Union, is geared particularly toward children but welcomes all ages.
“We’re starting with small steps at Drone Zone, giving everyone access,” White said. “As visitors grow more interested, they can enroll in additional programs to deepen their understanding.”
MOSI staff hope this exposure will spark interest in future careers involving advancing technologies. For now, they take joy in watching kids revel in the experience.
“It’s a blast to watch their faces light up when they successfully navigate a drone through a hoop,” White shared. “Seeing that joy is what this is all about.”
