Municipalities along Tampa Bay’s coast are still grappling with the damage assessment process, and in some cases, homeowners are receiving conflicting letters.

Earlier this week, Spectrum Bay News 9 also spoke with a St. Pete Beach resident who received contradictory letters, and now an Indian Rocks Beach resident is facing the same issue.

Storm surge from Hurricane Helene flooded Sonja Kis’ home of over two decades, which is now gutted and awaiting repairs.

“One of my hobbies is decorating and fixing up. This house is my livelihood, it’s my sanity, it’s my home,” Kis told Bay News 9 Tampa.

It’s been a long process of filing claims and completing paperwork.

In November, she received an email from the City of Indian Rocks Beach indicating that she could proceed with home repairs.

However, just days before Christmas, she received another damage assessment letter in the mail stating that her home was beyond repair.

“The recovery process has been, I have to say, much more traumatic than the actual flood incident itself,” Kis said.

Fortunately, she was able to connect with city officials who clarified the issue and confirmed that the first letter allowing her to proceed with repairs was correct.

Kis says it has been a long and frustrating road to reach this point.

She also mentions knowing many others who are still dealing with the same issue or have yet to receive a damage assessment letter.
