The hustle and bustle at Tampa International Airport isn’t solely due to the holiday travel surge this season. The airport is embarking on a significant expansion with the groundbreaking of its new Airside D terminal set for today.
Looking ahead, the new airside is slated to open in 2028. Airport officials have unveiled renderings showcasing the modern design of the forthcoming 16-gate, state-of-the-art facility, which will cater to both international and domestic flights.
This new addition will span two levels, with the first featuring an arrival processing area, and the upper level hosting two airline lounges alongside a central area for shopping and dining.
With Tampa International Airport currently handling around 25 million passengers each year, Airside D will play a crucial role in accommodating the region’s expansion, aiming to serve up to 35 million passengers annually by 2037.
Jeff Siddle, Vice President of Planning and Development at the airport, emphasized the necessity for expansion. “As our population grows, so does the demand for more gates. The opening of this airside will enhance our international operations and connectivity, significantly elevating our service to the world,” Siddle remarked.
The airport’s board has approved a $91 million contract for the project, which also encompasses the installation of security fencing around the new terminal and the setup of contractor offices.
Construction is scheduled to commence in the new year, with completion targeted for 2028.
