One more local city is taking steps to improve safety near schools by installing speed-detection cameras in designated school zones. City commissioners recently approved the initiative, a move that resident Barbara Gilman says is long overdue.

“This intersection is really dangerous. Fender-benders, people yelling and screaming at each other—it’s chaotic. People pretty much do whatever they want at these red lights,” said Gilman.

For the past two years, Gilman has hoped for increased traffic enforcement near Highlander Way, where her daughter attends Lake Wales High School. Despite the presence of crosswalks, Gilman says speeding remains a daily issue.

“People don’t pay attention when they turn. I’m honestly surprised a child hasn’t been hurt yet,” she added.

The Need for Speed-Detection Cameras

A study conducted by the city of Lake Wales last September recorded over 2,000 speeding violations near the high school, underscoring the need for stronger measures. Lake Wales Police Department Lieutenant Edward Palmer says the goal of the new cameras is to prevent accidents and save lives.

“We’re aiming to reduce accidents, serious injuries, and even fatalities in school zones,” Palmer explained.

Expanding Traffic Safety Measures

In addition to speed-detection cameras in school zones, city officials plan to install red-light cameras at intersections along two major highways. While the city is still in the process of selecting a company to manage the camera system, the effort reflects a broader commitment to enhancing traffic safety.

A Call for Patience

As the program takes shape, Gilman urges drivers to exercise caution and patience near schools.

“Around schools, it’s so important to be careful,” she said. “People need to slow down and be more mindful.”

Lake Wales will become the sixth city in Polk County to adopt camera enforcement in an effort to promote safer roads for students and the community.
