Residents and businesses have until December 31 to file a claim in a class action lawsuit challenging Hillsborough County’s 1% sales surtax, which a Florida court determined was unconstitutional.

The surtax, which was in effect from 2019 to 2021, applied to a wide range of transactions including retail purchases, hotel stays, event tickets, and commercial rent payments.
Claimants have two options for seeking refunds:
- Provide detailed receipts or proof of taxable expenditures to receive a precise refund matching their surtax payments.
- For Hillsborough County residents who lived in the county between January 1, 2019, and March 15, 2021, and cannot or prefer not to document specific purchases, claim a standard award of up to $100. The exact amount depends on the length of residency during that period.
Individuals and businesses must visit the settlement’s website before the December 31 deadline to file a claim. Those seeking refunds are encouraged to act promptly to ensure they take advantage of this compensation opportunity.
