Residents and businesses have until December 31 to file a claim in a class action lawsuit challenging Hillsborough County’s 1% sales surtax, which a Florida court determined was unconstitutional.

The surtax, which was in effect from 2019 to 2021, applied to a wide range of transactions including retail purchases, hotel stays, event tickets, and commercial rent payments.

Claimants have two options for seeking refunds:

  1. Provide detailed receipts or proof of taxable expenditures to receive a precise refund matching their surtax payments.
  2. For Hillsborough County residents who lived in the county between January 1, 2019, and March 15, 2021, and cannot or prefer not to document specific purchases, claim a standard award of up to $100. The exact amount depends on the length of residency during that period.

Individuals and businesses must visit the settlement’s website before the December 31 deadline to file a claim. Those seeking refunds are encouraged to act promptly to ensure they take advantage of this compensation opportunity.
