A significant weather event, involving a squall line of rain, is set to complicate travel and herald a swift drop in temperatures.

Local meteorologists are closely watching a powerful cold front expected to sweep through the region on Wednesday.

Residents of Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco Counties should brace for the heaviest rainfall and strongest wind gusts during late morning to early afternoon.

Although no weather watch is currently expected, the possibility of a couple of intense storms remains. Driving conditions are likely to become hazardous for roughly an hour, particularly on bridges where wind speeds might reach up to 50 mph.

Afterwards, prepare to swap umbrellas for winter coats as temperatures are predicted to plummet by over 20 degrees within just a few hours.

WHEN: From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11.

IMPACT: Expect wet roads and perilous driving conditions due to heavy rain and winds between 30-50 mph during the midday hours. The sudden drop in temperature will necessitate dressing warmly for the late afternoon and evening. By Thursday morning, there’s a chance of freezing conditions along the Nature Coast, with temperatures dropping to near 40 degrees in Tampa.

NEEDS: Exercise caution when driving during the middle of the day. Winter jackets will be essential as the temperature drops post-sunset on Wednesday.
