Pinellas County is pursuing a federal grant to replace the aging Dunedin Causeway Bridge, which has been a critical connection between Dunedin and Honeymoon Island since 1963. The current bridge, constructed in two spans over six decades ago, no longer meets modern engineering standards, prompting county officials to take action.
The county has submitted a grant application to the Federal Highway Administration for $79 million, with the total project cost estimated at over $100 million. If approved, the project would not only replace the existing infrastructure but also enhance accessibility and safety for both locals and visitors.
The proposed new bridge design includes significant improvements, such as a wider sidewalk and a 15-foot wide multi-use trail that would connect to the Pinellas Trail. These enhancements address current challenges faced by pedestrians and cyclists who currently struggle with narrow walkways.

Local resident Jason Yanofksy, who frequently walks the bridge, welcomes the potential improvements. “One of the things that’s difficult about part of the bridge is that bikes and people tend to clash just a little bit, because the walkways really aren’t very wide,” he explained. Additionally, concerns about the draw bridge’s functionality, which can disrupt both vehicular and boat traffic, make the replacement project even more critical.
The current project timeline anticipates construction from 2028 to 2031. County officials are optimistic about the grant approval and hope to receive confirmation by the summer of 2025.
Yanofksy captures the community’s sentiment, stating, “Anything to get the area to be more accessible to people is a good thing. Florida is all about the outdoors.” The proposed bridge replacement represents not just an infrastructure upgrade, but a commitment to improving community connectivity and recreational opportunities.
