Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies joined forces with Tampa police and Florida Highway Patrol troopers to clamp down on impaired drivers during the Thanksgiving holiday, resulting in numerous arrests.

Over the holiday weekend, more than 300 drivers were stopped and 39 were arrested as part of “Operation Turkey,” a collaborative, multi-agency effort aimed at preventing impaired driving from Wednesday through Sunday, according to a news release.

Deputies, Tampa police officers, and Florida Highway Patrol troopers conducted 330 traffic stops, issued 21 citations, gave out 309 warnings, arrested 39 individuals on DUI charges, and made 3 additional arrests for other offenses.

“Thanksgiving is about coming together with family and friends. No one should have to worry about their safety on the roads during such a special time,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Our dedicated DUI Unit worked tirelessly to ensure that impaired drivers were taken off the streets, helping to protect everyone in our community.”

Tampa police also ran their own operation, “No Leftovers,” which resulted in 17 DUI arrests, 582 traffic warnings, 136 traffic citations, and the recovery of nine guns, according to an X post. This operation also took place from Wednesday through Sunday.

“I want to express my deep thanks to our deputies and partner agencies for their tireless work this past weekend. Many of them sacrificed time with their families to ensure the safety of others,” Chronister added.

These coordinated efforts underscore the commitment to keeping the community safe from impaired drivers during the holiday season.
