After enduring back-to-back hurricanes, Sweet Life Bistro has reopened its doors, marking a major milestone for owner Sami Salami. The beloved café celebrated its grand reopening on Friday, two months after Hurricane Helene caused severe damage.
Behind the counter, Salami crafts one of his signature lattes—a simple yet meaningful task that seemed nearly impossible just weeks ago.
“All of our inventory was gone,” Salami recalled. “All of the equipment was upside down. We had to start from scratch.”
The shop suffered extensive damage in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Now, what customers see is a testament to Salami’s relentless effort to restore the bistro to its former charm.
“The water line came all the way up to here,” he said, pointing to a mark on the wall. “All the machines on the ground floor were completely destroyed.”
True to its name, Sweet Life Bistro specializes in indulgent treats. From ice cream and candy to coffee, lattes, and baked goods, the café offers a little something for everyone.
“We also have bakery items like muffins, croissants, and four kinds of bagels with cream cheese,” Salami added.
Rebuilding and reopening took time, with Salami even working on Thanksgiving Day to add finishing touches.
“It’s all worth it,” he said. “This morning, people came in, and we had such positive interactions—so much good energy. It makes everything we’ve done worthwhile.”
The warm reception from the community has left Salami optimistic about the future.
“I’m amazed at how quickly everything is bouncing back,” he said. “In a couple of months, I believe the whole city will be back on its feet.”
