Demonstrating unsurprising demand, the “My Safe Florida Condo” pilot program, designed to help Florida condo associations fortify their buildings, reached its application capacity within just three days.

Allocated $30 million as part of the broader “My Safe Florida Home” initiative, the program allows each condo association to receive up to $175,000. This means approximately 170 condo associations could benefit, assuming they apply for the maximum amount.

State officials revealed that over 800 condo associations throughout Florida applied for grants within the first three days.

Jim West, board president of the Marbella Condominiums in Daytona Beach Shores, unfortunately missed out on applying but is optimistic about future opportunities. “Absolutely, we would take advantage of it,” he said. “I am going to put my name in, for when they do the thing and if they open it up again.”

West has been tirelessly working to rebuild the Marbella after its seawall failed during past storms. The condo association is still addressing vulnerabilities around doors and windows, a perfect match for the My Safe Florida Condo program.

Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis explained, “It’s not so much for structural improvements, but more for hardening improvements—anything we can do to help water barriers, new windows, new doors.” He also noted that these enhancements could potentially reduce insurance premiums, which would be a welcome relief for West, whose insurance costs soared from $60,000 in 2022 to $264,000 in 2023.

West remains hopeful for the program’s success and looks forward to applying again if it reopens. The initial eligibility focused on condo associations within 15 miles of the coastline.

Patronis’ office emphasized that condo associations must initially cover the project costs upfront, with reimbursement following approval.

Looking ahead, officials are seeking at least $200 million from the state Legislature to fund the My Safe Florida Home program in 2025. This significant funding boost aims to continue supporting Florida residents in strengthening their homes against natural disasters.
