The City of Treasure Island is actively working to address the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, focusing on debris management and permit processing to aid recovery efforts.
Debris Management Efforts
Treasure Island’s debris management contractors are now concentrating on collecting sand from the city’s right-of-ways. The cleanup will start in residential areas before moving to commercial properties. It is important to note that crews will only pick up sand in the right-of-ways. Property owners are responsible for removing sand from private property.
Permit Processing Surge
The City of Treasure Island’s Community Development Department (CDD) is working to help residents and businesses recover from the storms. Since Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the city has received an unprecedented 959 permit requests—more than half of what is typically seen in an entire year.
Despite this surge, the team is processing permits daily. On days when the office is closed to in-person visits, staff members focus solely on reviewing applications to expedite the process. Residents and property owners must obtain a Substantial Damage Determination letter to apply for building permits to make repairs.
Additional Support
The city is also receiving extra support from the state, with more resources expected later this week, and volunteers have joined to help streamline operations.
Substantial Damage Determination
City staff gradually receive substantial damage determination data from the county twice a week. As soon as the data is reviewed, letters will be sent out. The first batch of letters was sent out on Monday, November 18.
Current Permit Status
- Permits Under Review: 437
- Permits Ready to Be Issued (pending missing information from applicants): 85
