Treasure Island, in collaboration with Pinellas County, has made significant progress in the cleaning and restoration of Sunset Beach following the impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. According to a recent Instagram post by the City of Treasure Island, contractors have screened nearly 40,000 cubic yards of sand and returned it to the beach.
This achievement marks a notable step forward in the recovery process, although some sections remain inaccessible to contractors due to their narrowness. Current regulations restrict contractors from working below the mean high water line, which includes the remaining affected areas.
Officials Seek Additional Aid from the White House
Local, county, and state officials are now seeking additional aid from the White House to support emergency restoration services. Should these negotiations fall through, Florida officials have a contingency plan. They have applied for an emergency permit to override existing regulations, allowing emergency nourishment operations in the restricted areas.
Community Updates and Event Cancellations
In related news, Treasure Island officials have announced the cancellation of the annual Holiday Lighted Boat Parade for 2024:
“It is with a heavy heart that Treasure Island announces the cancellation of this year’s Holiday Lighted Boat Parade. City officials made the decision based on safety and the continued recovery efforts in the city. Next year, the parade will sail again on Dec. 20, bigger, better, and brighter than ever.”
Treasure Island continues to work diligently to restore its beautiful beach and support its community through these challenging times.
