The Mirror Lake neighborhood in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida may soon become a historic district, preserving its low-rise, pedestrian-friendly character. The city’s Community Planning and Preservation Commission unanimously approved a citizen-initiated application to designate the area as a local historic district.

The proposed designation, led by the preservation group Preserve the Burg, must be approved by the City Council. If approved, it would require properties in the district to obtain approval for exterior changes, new construction, demolition, or relocation.

The historic district would not impact developments that have already received site plan approval. Existing historic landmarks like the Mirror Lake Community Library would also be unaffected.

Many residents supported the designation, citing a need to preserve the neighborhood’s charm. Over 50% of parcels in the proposed district voted in favor, meeting the city’s threshold. However, some, like a recently departed resident and a local developer, raised concerns about the voting process and the potential impacts.

The City Council will consider the historic district designation at upcoming meetings in November and December.
