More than 40 individuals faced over 50 charges in a two-day operation targeting unlicensed contractors working in beach areas affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Dubbed “Flood of Fraud 2,” the operation took place from Tuesday to Thursday on Clearwater Beach.
“Our primary focus is on protecting residents and businesses, who are eager to rebuild but are vulnerable to exploitation by unlicensed contractors,” said Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. “Many of these people pose as contractors with no intent or ability to complete the work they promise. They are scammers and thieves, no different from burglars roaming neighborhoods at night.”
Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy noted, “We’ve never seen storm damage of this magnitude in Clearwater. In some cases, homes were completely destroyed and waterlogged. Our goal is to prevent citizens from being further harmed by unlicensed contractors.”
The sheriff’s office urged residents to report unlicensed contractors to the Pinellas County Tipline at 727-582-6767. Most repairs require permits, and avoiding necessary assessments or working without permits can have serious consequences. Although storm-related permit fees are currently waived, residents should be cautious of contractors asking them to obtain owner/builder permits. Reputable contractors typically secure their own permits.
A list of licensed and insured contractors is available at Pinellas County Contractor Search. State-certified contractor licenses can be verified online at the Florida Licensing Portal.
