Hurricanes Helene and Milton disrupted countless lives, including those of many pets. Now, a unique support system in St. Petersburg, Hank’s Bark Box, is providing essential food and supplies to help pet owners keep their furry family members fed and safe.

“People lost everything—some even had their belongings washed away into the streets or ocean,” said Mark James, founder of Hank’s Bark Box, speaking to FOX 13 News. Established in memory of his late dog Hank, who passed away from cancer, Hank’s Bark Box operates as a 24-hour, community-driven resource where pet owners can collect supplies anytime they need.

“Our goal is simple,” James explained, “we want to keep families together, even when everything else feels broken.” The box is consistently stocked with essentials, making it possible for families, especially children, to keep their pets when they might otherwise have to give them up.

After Hurricane Helene, the demand grew tremendously. “We were seeing needs we hadn’t anticipated,” James said. “Within 48 hours, we distributed 2,700 pounds of food, along with hundreds of bowls, leashes, harnesses, cat litter, litter boxes, and collars.”

Initially funded by James and his wife, the initiative now relies on an Amazon wishlist, which allows people worldwide to contribute. Supplies arrive daily, helping to keep Hank’s Bark Box stocked and ready.

Reflecting on his mission, James expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported the cause. “Thank you to everyone. People and pets are hurting, and all we want is to help, even in small ways,” he said. “Thanks to you, we’re making a difference.”
